Research Fellow - Membrane and Separation Technology

About the role

The Nanyang Environment and Water Research Institute (NEWRI) at NTU is looking for a Research Fellow to carry out research on membrane and separation technology for desalination, resource recovery and decarbonisation. NEWRI is a globally recognised research and technology organisation covering biotechnology, membrane technology, chemicals and materials, resource recovery and modelling and artificial intelligence.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct membrane-related projects for desalination, decarbonisation, resource recovery and similar areas.
• Design, optimise, build, commission and operate membrane-based desalination and water reclamation pilot-scale and laboratory-scale systems.
• Carry out membrane and separation process modelling and module-scale desalination system modelling, including conventional modelling and machine learning-based modelling.
• Publish research data and prepare project progress reports.
• Assist in preparing grant proposals.
• Mentor junior PhD, master's and undergraduate students on their research projects.

Required profile

• PhD from a reputable university in chemical engineering, environmental engineering, mechanical engineering or a related field.
• Excellent publication record in journals, report writing and oral presentation skills.
• Self-motivated, able to work independently and in a team, with strong interpersonal, collaboration and communication skills.
• Strong sense of responsibility for research and project delivery.

Required skills

• Experience designing, optimising, building, commissioning and operating membrane-based desalination and water reclamation systems.
• Experience in membrane and separation process modelling, including machine learning-based modelling.
• Relevant research experience in membrane technology, electrochemical processes and electrode synthesis, and scaling up electrochemical water technology.
• Relevant research experience in fabricating RO/NF/ion-exchange membranes, organic solvent membranes and organic chemical synthesis, and in developing membrane and separation processes.
