Research Fellow (Power Systems and Optimization)

About the role

The Energy Research Institute at NTU is seeking a Research Fellow to lead the development of a flexibility planning tool for electrical distribution networks. The role focuses on optimisation of distributed energy resources to support grid reinforcement and defer capital expenditure.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement a flexibility planning tool that considers behind-the-meter and utility-side installations.
• Analyse the impact of renewable generation and storage on distribution systems.
• Design optimisation algorithms for the deployment of DERs such as ESS, PV, EV charging stations and flexible loads.
• Model system-level and device-level constraints using stochastic programming and approximate dynamic programming.
• Implement distribution power-flow methods for DER-rich networks and model flexibility envelopes.
• Formulate and solve constrained optimisation problems using convex optimisation, dynamic programming, NLP, MILP and MINLP.
• Apply decomposition and relaxation techniques to address large-scale planning problems.
• Collaborate with industry research partners on tool validation and deployment.

Required profile

• Strong background in power system planning and renewable energy integration.
• Experience with optimisation under uncertainty and flexibility planning using DERs.
• Ability to develop mathematical models and implement advanced optimisation algorithms.
