Research Scientist – Fibre Optics (High‑Power Beam Combiners)
ntu · NTU Main Campus
Job description
About the role
We are seeking a highly motivated Research Scientist / Fellow to join the fibre optics team at the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, NTU. The role focuses on developing next‑generation high‑power fibre beam combiners and creating advanced modelling and diagnostic tools.
Key responsibilities
- Develop and customise simulation templates using Beam Propagation Method (BPM) software (e.g., BeamProp) to model optical behaviour in fibre combiners.
- Perform thermal analysis with Finite Element Method (FEM) tools such as COMSOL, assessing heat distribution under high‑power operation.
- Define performance benchmarks (insertion loss, beam quality) by integrating empirical data from high‑power laser diodes.
- Validate models against literature and experimental results, collaborating with the fabrication team to diagnose performance gaps.
- Design, build and maintain experimental setups for characterising high‑power fibre components, measuring insertion loss, M², and thermal performance (>200 W/port).
- Standardise testing procedures and implement diagnostic methods like fibre index profiling and microscopic inspection.
Required profile
- Strong background in optical physics.
- Hands‑on experience in computational modelling and experimental characterisation of optical components.
- Ability to work collaboratively with fabrication and simulation teams.
Required skills
- Beam Propagation Method (BPM) software – BeamProp.
- Finite Element Method (FEM) software – COMSOL.
- Thermal analysis of high‑power optical systems.
- Optical performance measurement (insertion loss, beam quality M²).
- Fiber index profiling and microscopic visual inspection.
