Senior Java Backend Developer (12-Month Contract)

About the role

The NETS Group, a payments services group operating Singapore's national debit scheme, is looking for a highly experienced Senior Java Backend Engineer to join its backend payment systems team. The role suits someone who enjoys complex, high-throughput environments and wants to build resilient, high-performance backend services. It is a 12-month contract.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop and maintain scalable backend systems for high-volume transactions and international payment gateway integrations.
• Build secure, high-performance APIs for internal and external integration.
• Contribute to architecture design for scalable, resilient and fault-tolerant systems.
• Implement event-driven and asynchronous processing, and message-driven architectures using enterprise messaging systems.
• Optimise application, database and service performance, and run load testing to find bottlenecks.
• Troubleshoot production issues and perform root cause analysis.
• Work with DevOps teams on CI/CD pipelines and manage build, deployment and release processes.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related field.
• 6-9 years of Java backend development experience.
• Proven experience in e-commerce, banking or other high-volume transaction environments.
• Experience building distributed, scalable, high-availability systems and working in production support and incident resolution.

Required skills

• Java 8+ (preferably Java 21) and Spring Boot.
• Microservices, event-driven architecture and REST API development.
• Messaging systems, preferably Solace.
• MySQL, including tuning, indexing and query optimisation.
• JUnit, Mockito, Maven, Git, Jira and Jenkins CI/CD.
• Load testing and performance testing; AWS, Docker and Terraform are an added advantage.
