Senior Product Engineer (Mechanical)

About the role

Illumina is hiring a Senior Product Engineer (Mechanical) to support product lifecycle activities, including new product introduction, product transfer and ongoing manufacturing operations. The role ensures product quality, yield and compliance through engineering evaluation, troubleshooting and continuous improvement, working across functions to move smoothly from design to production.

Key responsibilities

• Support product transfer into manufacturing and lead readiness for mass production, including PFMEA updates, process controls and test method validation
• Perform data trending and analysis, and apply FMEA, DOE and statistical analysis to optimise quality and reduce costs
• Manage Engineering Change Requests and Notifications, including updates to work instructions and test requirements
• Support documentation such as engineering drawings, BOMs, test reports, assembly procedures and validation plans
• Lead troubleshooting using structured frameworks (8D, KT) and define CTQs, monitoring Cp/Cpk and SPC dashboards
• Create and maintain project schedules, manage action logs and risk registers, and authorise validation protocols and reports
• Mentor junior engineers and occasionally travel to customer or supplier sites for first builds

Required profile

• Typically 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree, or 3 years with a Master's, or a PhD without experience
• Deep expertise in mechanical mechanisms, GD&T, tolerance analysis and DFMA principles
• Strong understanding of thermodynamics and heat transfer, and familiarity with optics and fluidics interfaces
• Familiarity with ISO 13485, IEC 61010 and design control frameworks
• Proven ability to mentor engineers and to anticipate manufacturability challenges

Required skills

• Advanced proficiency in CAD and PLM systems
• Data analytics tools such as Excel, Minitab and JMP
• Scripting experience (e.g. VBA/Python) is a plus
