Senior Research Fellow - Vanadium Redox Flow Battery Stacks

About the role

The Energy Research Institute @ NTU (ERI@N), established in 2010, is a pan-university research institute focused on systems-level research for tropical megacities, covering the energy value chain from generation to end-use solutions. It is looking for a Senior Research Fellow to develop vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) stacks from pilot scale to commercial systems, ensuring performance, reliability and manufacturability. The role bridges R&D, testing and production so that the technology can move smoothly to large-scale deployment.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the development of VRFB stacks from prototype to commercial scale, ensuring performance and reliability.
• Develop, assemble and validate stack designs through structured testing, durability studies and failure analysis.
• Work with manufacturing and supply chain teams so that designs are production-ready and cost-effective.
• Set up test rigs, standard operating procedures and quality benchmarks, using performance data to drive continuous design improvement.

Required profile

• Master's or PhD in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, electrochemistry, materials science or a related discipline.
• Minimum 2-5 years of hands-on experience in electrochemical stack development, preferably in vanadium redox flow batteries, fuel cells or similar systems.
• Ability to work across R&D, manufacturing and testing teams in a scale-up or pilot-to-commercial environment.

Required skills

• Strong practical knowledge of stack scaling, assembly and performance testing.
• Experience with durability testing, failure analysis and data-driven design improvement.
