Research Fellow – Human Factors in Air Traffic Management

About the role

The Air Traffic Management Research Institute (ATMRI) at Nanyang Technological University seeks a Research Fellow to advance human‑factors and cognitive‑systems research for air traffic management. You will focus on operator cognitive load, situational awareness, and decision‑support interfaces for air traffic controllers.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct research on human‑factors and cognitive‑systems approaches to support ATM studies and applications.
• Design, develop, and evaluate decision‑support interfaces and operator‑facing tools using operational and simulated data.
• Support research on controller cognitive load, situational awareness, and resilience under current and future ATM concepts.
• Collaborate with researchers and engineers to create prototype solutions and human‑in‑the‑loop evaluation frameworks.
• Run user studies and analyse results (e.g., eye‑tracking, physiological sensing) in realistic operational scenarios.
• Prepare technical reports, research papers, and project deliverables; participate in meetings and reviews.
• Publish findings in top‑tier journals and conferences.
• Contribute to research proposals and related documentation.

Required profile

• PhD in Human‑Computer Interaction, Cognitive Science, Human Factors, Air Traffic Management, Transport or a related field.
• At least 1 year of relevant research experience in human factors, cognitive systems or safety‑critical domains.
• Familiarity with cognitive‑load assessment, decision‑support interfaces, or human‑in‑the‑loop systems for complex operational environments.
• Strong written and oral communication skills for technical reporting and academic publishing.

Required skills

• Programming for research and data analysis (Python or similar).
• Experience with eye‑tracking methods.
• Experience with physiological sensing techniques.
