Postdoctoral Fellow - AI/ML-driven High-throughput Material Synthesis

About the role

The School of Materials Science and Engineering at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) is recruiting a Postdoctoral Fellow for the AxCIS Lab project, a collaboration between NTU, NUS and BEARS. The work focuses on AI/ML-driven high-throughput, closed-loop experimentation to discover and optimise electrocatalytic materials for CO2 reduction, combining automated fabrication and characterisation workflows with agentic AI systems.

Key responsibilities

• Run AI/ML-driven high-throughput, closed-loop experiments to accelerate the discovery, evaluation and optimisation of electrocatalytic materials for CO2 reduction.
• Design and build automated workflows for materials fabrication and characterisation, integrating AI agents for autonomous experimentation and decision-making.
• Develop multi-parameter optimisation strategies, including optimisation of in-situ catalyst regeneration.
• Collaborate with computational researchers to validate predictive models using experimental feedback.
• Analyse results, investigate structure-performance relationships and identify factors affecting electrocatalytic performance.
• Publish in peer-reviewed journals and present findings at conferences and meetings.

Required profile

• PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering or a closely related field.
• Strong hands-on experience in AI/ML-driven high-throughput experiments, preferably in materials science, electrochemistry or related fields.
• Demonstrated experience in multi-parameter optimisation, structure-performance analysis and/or mechanistic studies.
• Research track record with peer-reviewed publications and the ability to plan and manage research independently.

Required skills

• Experience with AI-agentic workflows for experimental automation and data analysis.
• Familiarity with machine learning techniques, optimisation algorithms and data-driven approaches for materials discovery.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, teamwork and communication skills.
