Job description

About the role

Micron is hiring a Principal / Staff Engineer for firmware development, focused on security firmware for SSD products. The role acts as the primary technical escalation point for customer-reported security issues, supports customer qualification and compliance, and represents Micron in direct technical engagement with customer engineering teams.

Key responsibilities

  • Act as the primary technical escalation point for Security Firmware on SSD products, triaging and prioritizing customer issues and driving them to closure within committed response times.
  • Guide customers through configuring, integrating and validating SSD security features such as TCG Opal/Pyrite/Ruby, Enterprise SSC, ATA and NVMe security commands, self-encrypting drives, secure boot, signed firmware updates, key management and device attestation.
  • Reproduce customer, qualification and field failures in the lab, analyze firmware logs, traces and bus captures, debug Security Firmware source and deliver documented root causes and corrective actions.
  • Develop, unit test and functionally validate Security Firmware changes and customer-specific builds, ensuring they meet the technical spec matrix.
  • Assess the impact of reported vulnerabilities on products in the field and support mitigation planning, remediation and customer disclosure.
  • Support customer security audits, questionnaires and certifications (TCG, FIPS 140-3, Common Criteria) and produce application notes, integration guides and technical documentation.
  • Represent Micron to customer engineering teams, summarize escalation status and fix progress, and maintain issue records, root cause reports and knowledge base content.
  • Work collaboratively with firmware, product engineering, quality and field teams, and use AI-assisted tools responsibly to improve efficiency.

Required profile

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in computer or electrical engineering with 5+ years of relevant experience.
  • Strongly preferred: experience in a customer-facing engineering role such as customer engineering support, field applications, sustaining engineering or escalation management.
  • Experience in storage, storage systems or a related technology is an advantage.

Required skills

  • Embedded security knowledge: cryptography fundamentals (AES, RSA/ECC, SHA), key management, secure boot and secure firmware update.
  • Familiarity with TCG Opal, Enterprise SSC, ATA Security, NVMe security and self-encrypting drives is an advantage.
  • Programming languages such as C, C++ or Rust; Python for test automation and log parsing is an advantage.
  • Storage interfaces (PCIe/NVMe, SATA, SAS) and NAND flash are advantages.
  • Debugging firmware with debuggers, trace and log analysis and protocol analyzers.
  • Defect tracking, change control and firmware release processes in production or sustaining environments.
