Senior Commercial Legal Counsel – APAC

About the role

GitLab is seeking a Senior Commercial Legal Counsel to support its growth across the Asia‑Pacific and Japan (APAC) region. Reporting to the Director of Legal, Commercial, you will provide legal clarity for complex commercial deals, manage cross‑border legal questions, and translate diverse local requirements into practical deal strategies.

Key responsibilities

• Negotiate complex commercial and technology agreements across APAC markets, including SaaS, software, partnership, services, consulting, marketing, licensing, data‑privacy, and AI‑related contracts.
• Manage high‑priority transactions across multiple jurisdictions, balancing legal risk with business objectives.
• Partner with regional sales leadership, internal stakeholders, and external counterparties to move deals forward with clear legal guidance.
• Navigate country‑specific contracting norms, approval paths, and drafting requirements, especially for Japan.
• Advise on cross‑border transaction structures and coordinate with outside counsel when local legal support is needed.
• Guide work involving data‑privacy and AI‑related terms across multiple jurisdictions.

Required profile

• Senior‑level commercial lawyer with extensive experience negotiating technology and SaaS agreements.
• Deep knowledge of APAC legal environments, including Japan, and ability to interpret country‑specific contracting norms.
• Proven track record handling high‑value, cross‑border transactions and managing external counsel.
• Strong collaboration skills to work with sales, product, and compliance teams.
