System Design Engineer - Optical Inspection

About the role

KLA's Semiconductor Products and Customers (Semi PC) business unit designs, builds and sells inspection, metrology and analytics systems that help chip manufacturers meet high-quality standards for AI, data centers, automotive and electronic devices. The LS-SWIFT division delivers high-throughput patterned wafer inspection systems. This System Design Engineer role covers optical alignment, optical system integration, test and characterization, and manufacturing introduction, working closely with manufacturing engineers and technicians.

Key responsibilities

• Optical alignment, optical system integration, test and characterization
• Define system and subsystem specifications
• Document manufacturing procedures
• Train manufacturing engineers and technicians
• Derive and manage detailed manufacturing requirements and introduction plans in the design concept phase
• Cover all aspects of manufacturing introduction: design for manufacturability, quality, tooling, training, process documentation, product structure, build process optimization and facilities requirements

Required profile

• Masters or PhD in Physics, Optics Engineering, Mechanical, Electrical or related fields, with at least 3-5 years of work experience
• Proven track record of resolving technical issues and solving problems within a focused team
• Ability to work effectively with little supervision and deliver results on time
• Good communication and interpersonal skills; customer-facing experience is preferred

Required skills

• Experience in optical alignment and characterization
• Hands-on experience building and testing optical inspection or metrology tools
• Strong diagnostics and troubleshooting skills in optics and opto-mechanics
• Fundamentals in optics, microscopy, imaging systems, sensors, motion control, precision positioning, automation and system characterization
• Preferred: knowledge of semiconductor manufacturing, wafer inspection, defect review, lithography, advanced packaging, metrology or process control
• Preferred: Python, JavaScript, MATLAB, scripting, statistical analysis and engineering automation tools
