Legal & Compliance Counsel – Singapore Trading Hub

About the role

This position supports a leading international energy and commodities trading firm operating from its Singapore hub. The Legal & Compliance Counsel will provide strategic legal advice and ensure robust compliance across physical commodity, derivatives, and trade finance activities throughout Asia.

Key responsibilities

• Draft, review and negotiate commercial contracts for physical commodity trading.
• Support derivatives and paper trading agreements, including ISDA documentation.
• Advise on shipping, logistics, charterparties, bills of lading, demurrage claims and maritime disputes.
• Manage KYC, AML, sanctions screening and counter‑party due‑diligence processes.
• Provide legal support for trade finance matters such as letters of credit, guarantees and banking documentation.
• Handle commercial disputes, arbitration and litigation as required.
• Review and strengthen compliance policies, governance frameworks and internal controls.

Required profile

• Law degree (LL.B., LL.M., or J.D.) with admission to the Bar in Singapore, the UK, China or another common‑law jurisdiction (preferred).
• Minimum 3 years of legal and compliance experience in commodity trading, energy, oil & gas, petrochemicals or a specialist maritime/energy law firm.
• Strong knowledge of international trade law, shipping, sanctions, AML and commodity trading documentation.
• Proven ability to work in a fast‑paced, international trading environment.
• Fluency in English and Mandarin to liaise with regional stakeholders and headquarters.
