Research Associate - Metal Additive Manufacturing

About the role

The Singapore Centre for 3D Printing (SC3DP) at NTU is a research centre covering all aspects of additive manufacturing, with expertise across biomedical, construction, aerospace, marine and offshore sectors. It is seeking a highly motivated Research Associate with a strong engineering background to advance an industry-collaborative research project on metal additive manufacturing. The role focuses on characterizing 3D printed samples, evaluating their microstructure and mechanical properties, and helping translate research into industrial applications.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct microstructural analysis using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD), X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and optical microscopy.
• Perform tensile, fatigue, hardness and impact testing to evaluate the performance of printed components.
• Analyze testing data, visualize results, prepare detailed technical reports and present findings to industrial partners.
• Evaluate the effect of post-processing on material properties and identify defects such as porosity and lack of fusion.

Required profile

• Master's degree in Materials Science & Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or a closely related technical field.
• Extensive hands-on experience with advanced material characterization and mechanical testing equipment.
• Deep understanding of material science and structure-property relationships in metallic systems.
• Familiarity with materials commonly used in additive manufacturing is highly desirable.
