Research Fellow – Coastal Sediment Monitoring

About the role

The Earth Observatory of Singapore at Nanyang Technological University seeks a Research Fellow to lead a sediment monitoring programme within the Marine Climate Change Science Programme. The role focuses on quantifying historical, modern and future sedimentation across Singapore’s mangroves, mudflats and seagrass meadows.

Key responsibilities

• Coordinate and lead field‑based sediment monitoring using surface elevation tables and sediment plates.
• Collect sediment cores and surface samples from coastal habitats.
• Conduct laboratory analyses of grain size, organic carbon and develop geochronologies.
• Apply remote‑sensing techniques, including LiDAR, to monitor sediment transport.
• Run numerical models to simulate future sediment budgets under sea‑level rise and land‑use scenarios.
• Interpret results and prepare scientific reports, publications and conference presentations.

Required profile

• PhD in physical geography, geology, environmental science or a closely related discipline.
• Proven experience in intertidal field work and coastal sediment sampling.
• Experience supervising junior researchers in coastal environmental projects.
• Strong background in laboratory analysis of coastal sediments.
