Research Fellow – Membrane & Separation Technology

About the role

The Nanyang Environment and Water Research Institute (NEWRI) at NTU seeks a Research Fellow to advance membrane and separation technologies for desalination, resource recovery, and decarbonisation. You will work in a multidisciplinary environment focused on water circularity and sustainability.

Key responsibilities

• Lead membrane‑based projects targeting desalination, resource recovery and carbon reduction.
• Design, optimise, construct, commission and operate pilot‑scale and laboratory‑scale membrane desalination and water reclamation systems.
• Develop and apply process and module‑scale modelling, including conventional and machine‑learning approaches.
• Publish research findings, prepare progress reports and assist in grant proposal preparation.
• Mentor PhD, master’s and undergraduate students on their research projects.

Required profile

• PhD in chemical, environmental or mechanical engineering or a related discipline from a reputable university.
• Strong publication record in peer‑reviewed journals.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a research team.

Required skills

• Membrane design and optimisation for desalination and water reclamation.
• Pilot‑scale system construction, commissioning and operation.
• Membrane and separation process modelling (conventional and machine‑learning).
• Electrochemical process engineering and electrode synthesis.
• Scaling‑up electrochemical water technologies.
• Fabrication of RO, NF, ion‑exchange and organic‑solvent membranes.
• Organic chemical synthesis related to membrane development.
