Research Fellow (Organic Chemistry)

About the role

The School of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology (CCEB) at NTU is looking for a Research Fellow in Organic Chemistry to develop sustainable synthetic methods for high-value glycosides through traceless activation and radical coupling. The work focuses on selective modification of carbohydrates and glycosides, radical reaction development, synthesis and purification of complex products, mechanistic studies and analytical characterisation under the project "Sustainable Chemistry for High-Value Glycoside Products via Traceless Activation".

Key responsibilities

• Design and execute multi-step syntheses of carbohydrates, glycosides, glycomimetics and related high-value products.
• Develop selective sugar-modification and functionalization methods using traceless activation strategies.
• Develop and optimise radical coupling reactions, including reaction design, selectivity, efficiency and substrate-scope evaluation.
• Plan protecting-group strategies and control chemoselectivity, regioselectivity and stereoselectivity in complex carbohydrate substrates.
• Purify products and intermediates using flash chromatography, preparative HPLC, recrystallisation and other suitable methods.

Required profile

• PhD in Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Chemical Biology, Biochemistry or a related discipline.
• Hands-on experience in carbohydrate chemistry, sugar modification and the synthesis of glycosides, glycomimetics or related compounds.
• Demonstrated experience in designing and optimising radical coupling reactions, including photochemical or electrochemical approaches where applicable.

Required skills

• Strong organic synthesis and reaction-development skills, including protecting-group strategies and control of chemoselectivity, regioselectivity and stereoselectivity.
• Purification and structure characterisation using flash chromatography, preparative HPLC, 1D/2D NMR, LC-MS/HRMS and HPLC/UPLC.
