Senior Research Engineer I – AI/NLP for Smart Nation Platforms

About the role

The Centre for Smart Platform Infrastructure Research on Integrative Technology (SPIRIT) at Nanyang Technological University seeks a Senior Research Engineer I to lead AI and NLP research for Singapore’s Smart Nation initiatives. You will design and scale advanced language technologies that power smart city applications.

Key responsibilities

• Gather system requirements by defining and analysing complex platform problems.
• Design and implement NLP algorithms and models for semantic analysis, including word embeddings, named‑entity recognition, coreference resolution, parsing, and ontology/knowledge‑graph construction.
• Apply NLP techniques to knowledge and information retrieval, incorporating spatiotemporal relevance ranking.
• Conduct translational research to deploy state‑of‑the‑art solutions at scale for real‑world challenges.
• Document research outcomes and produce scientific reports.

Required profile

• PhD in Computer Science or a closely related field.
• Research experience in AI and Natural Language Processing.
• Strong publication record in relevant domains.
• Passion for innovative NLP and AI research and its practical applications.

Required skills

• Proficiency in Python programming.
• Experience with C/C++ development.
• Hands‑on expertise with NLP libraries and research packages.
• Large‑scale text processing and analytics capabilities.
• Knowledge of semantic analysis techniques such as word embeddings, NER, coreference resolution, parsing, ontology and knowledge‑graph construction.
