System Design Engineer - DUV Laser

About the role

KLA's LS-SWIFT division, which supplies patterned wafer inspection systems for high-volume semiconductor manufacturing, is looking for a self-motivated systems engineer to help develop its next-generation DUV laser for wafer inspection equipment. Systems engineering is central to product development, requiring close collaboration with a multi-functional team through all phases to meet cost, functionality and performance targets.

Key responsibilities

• Interpret market requirements and allocate system budgets and specifications to meet targeted performance.
• Develop product concepts on the bench to prove feasibility and mitigate technical risks.
• Work with multi-disciplinary functional groups to define, guide and implement the design.
• Participate in DUV laser integration and testing, including building and aligning lasers, designing and building test benches for laser qualification, and solving issues.
• Support product introduction by training operations and field personnel, driving procedures and checklists, and solving technical and non-technical problems.
• Give clear feedback at design reviews, plan and run experiments to validate prototypes, analyse test results and write concise formal reports with findings and recommendations.

Required profile

• Strong background in engineering or physical science; PhD in applied optics, physics or mechanical/electrical engineering preferred.
• Hands-on experience aligning, debugging and characterising lasers or other optical systems; DUV laser experience is a plus.
• Experience driving projects through concept, design, prototyping, testing, integration, troubleshooting and risk management.
• Good track record of completing projects to stated requirements.
• Strong communication skills, able to share technical information with functional groups and report to management and vendors.

Required skills

• Diagnostics and troubleshooting in optics, opto-mechanics and motion control systems.
• Programming, especially Python, MATLAB, JMP or LabVIEW, to collect and analyse image and system data.
