Manufacturing Systems Engineer 2

About the role

Illumina is hiring a Manufacturing Systems Engineer 2 to design, develop, integrate and support digital manufacturing solutions across MES, equipment data systems, operational applications, analytics platforms and AI-enabled manufacturing capabilities. The role partners with Manufacturing, Process Engineering, Equipment Engineering, Quality and OT teams to build and sustain data-driven manufacturing workflows that improve efficiency, equipment reliability and troubleshooting.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop and support digital and AI manufacturing solutions that improve efficiency, data visibility and decision-making.
• Integrate manufacturing and equipment enterprise systems with equipment data sources and enterprise data platforms.
• Develop and optimize databases, data pipelines, APIs and reporting solutions.
• Design and build AI agents that make business-context-aware decisions and act autonomously within guardrails, and deploy AI-powered products and intelligent workflows.
• Work with Manufacturing, Process Engineering, Equipment Engineering, Quality, OT and IT teams to turn business requirements into digital solutions.
• Support testing, validation, deployment, troubleshooting and lifecycle management of applications and integrations.
• Drive continuous improvement through automation, analytics and digital transformation, and contribute to operational intelligence, predictive analytics and smart manufacturing.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Information Systems or a related discipline.
• 3-5 years of experience in software development, application development, systems engineering, system integration, data engineering or related roles.
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting, problem-solving and communication skills, and ability to manage multiple tasks across functions.
• Understanding of SDLC, testing methodologies and deployment practices.
• Experience building and deploying AI agents, including multi-agent architectures, agent orchestration, tool calling, workflow execution, RAG and knowledge retrieval systems.

Required skills

• Microsoft SQL Server, including query optimization, views and stored procedures.
• One or more programming languages such as Python, C#, Java or JavaScript.
• Source control and version management tools such as GitHub.
• Preferred: manufacturing systems or industrial data platforms, Power BI, Databricks, Azure, ETL/ELT, vector databases, semantic search, RAG patterns, dashboards and workflow automation.
