Senior Staff Program Manager - Data Platform

About the role

Illumina is hiring a Senior Staff Program Manager to lead its data platform program. This is a highly complex, visible role at the intersection of many teams, responsible for delivering high-profile projects across multiple software and bioinformatics teams so that goals and commitments are met. The role interfaces with other technology teams and senior leadership to set scope, schedule and cost, and communicates status, issues and risks. It sits within a team integrating scaled agile software development and AI-driven development in a managed software quality environment.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and own major data platform initiatives spanning multiple engineering and product teams
• Work with architects, product managers and engineers on scope, trade-offs and technical decisions, and call out sequencing and risk
• Drive a cross-functional leadership team (Core Team) to deliver program commitments
• Create and run software project plans covering scope, schedule, staffing, quality, risk, budget, dependencies and procurement, and revise them as needs change
• Align stakeholders with business objectives and priorities, and lead projects that rely heavily on AI tools
• Track progress through metrics, lead senior management reviews and governance meetings, and remove obstacles
• Analyze and manage program risks, and define and optimize project and program management processes and tools

Required profile

• 12+ years of proven experience leading and delivering complex software application projects
• 5+ years of recent experience in a regulated environment
• Ability to work independently and communicate across all levels of the organization
• Experience in a matrix environment, influencing at all levels, and owning outcomes
• Experience improving software development and program management processes in a growing organization
• Experience with genomics or multiomics data is a strong plus; learning the domain is required if you do not yet have it

Required skills

• Strong understanding of software development processes and project planning and execution, including estimating and scheduling
• Polished communication skills, including presenting to senior leaders and explaining software concepts to non-software professionals
• Preferred: cloud hyperscaler experience (AWS, GCP, Azure), AI-native software development, data pipeline and workflow orchestration, and coding or data analysis (Python, SQL, R)
